Chinese character for happiness

Several years ago, my wife bought a series of cards with Chinese characters depicting various emotions. This is one of them – happiness.

We have them mounted in a picture frame on the wall of our family room.

I was looking at this one tonight, from half way across the room, while I was eating, wondering how that pictograph conveyed the meaning of happiness.

I guess it would help if I had an understanding of Chinese characters but, in the absence of any such appreciation, I was taken by the picture of ‘a man peering into a garbage can’ – it reminded me of one of those guys you see fossicking for recyclables in any city.

That sort of gave me a jolt.

Is the picture telling us that happiness has nothing to do with circumstances?

Maybe the ancient Chinese were on to something.

Thanks for dropping by, Peter.
